I'm 64 and remember riding my bikes for years with no head or taillights, but that was then and this is now and I'm more protective now of my family. My wife, 7 year old son, and I ride often in our medium sized town, usually in late afternoon. Sometimes the sun helps us, and sometimes we begin or end late. For a while, I put some Walmart lights on their bikes because there are no other stores nearby with any bike lights. Bell at Wmt does have a taillight which is pretty good for the money, but the headlights are pretty flimsy and one battery change ends their usability. One afternoon, my son and I got caught up doing some work at our church, and darkness descended before we would leave; though the church is just a couple of blocks from home, I was still a bit concerned, and we used our taillights with no headlights working. Thereafter, I upgraded my son's headlight to a better Bell ipulse ($20) which is quite good for the money, but I thought I'd spend a bit more for my bike as a comparison. I have a Planet Bike superflash which is pretty good; I did not think the taillight was as powerful as I had read, but a friend passing us in a vehicle joked about how bright it was, so I decided it was better than I thought, and decided I'd try another PB light, and got this one at about $40. It is very sturdy metal which means that changing batteries, included with purchase, won't compromise the light. There are two steady modes, medium followed by a little brighter mode, and then a flashing mode. Let me tell you, the steady modes would be just fine for any emergency/flashlight use. I have several 3D cell Maglites with Terralux and Malkoff upgrade dropins, so I have some experience, and this light will equal a 2D cell standard bulb Maglite; the beam has a good throw in distance, is white and coherent, with none of the feathery penumbra that many bike headlights have. The flashing mode will give oncoming cars enough warning of your presence, yet leave a good riding light, too; in short, the flash is good enough to "see and be seen". The PB site has a really neat comparison of its lights, and this is the second most powerful, but at a really affordable price. The LEDs will last as long as my son, and I guess lithium AA's could be a really good replacement. I read of riders commuting for miles in almost pitch dark, sometimes using more than one headlight, and I don't know if this would meet their needs, but I would think for most riders in town with streetlights, or in neighborhoods with ambient house lights, this would meet requirements for just about anyone. For those stretches where lighting is low or nonexistent, this should do just fine. For the price, one could get two for plenty of light; I would think that 2 watts with a bulb this good should put out about 70-90 lumens, adequate for most riders.
In summation, a very sturdy and affordable light with enough output for the vast majority of users, made by a very reputable company. i guess their slogan is something like "made for bikeriders by bikeriders."
